Overview
WindUp is a mobile app built for the world's wind sports community — kite surfers, windsurfers, sailors, paragliders, and anyone whose sport depends on the wind being just right. Instead of obsessively checking weather apps, users tell WindUp their ideal conditions and the app notifies them the instant those conditions arrive at their chosen location. It's powered by AI-enhanced forecasting data from over 10,000 weather stations globally.
The Challenge
Wind sports athletes spend enormous amounts of time checking weather forecasts, only to miss sessions when conditions shift unexpectedly or arrive at odd hours. Existing weather apps are built for general audiences and require users to interpret raw data themselves. WindUp needed to solve a specific problem:
- How do you reliably alert athletes the moment their exact wind conditions occur — not before, not after?
- How do you aggregate and interpret data from thousands of weather stations accurately enough to be trusted?
- How do you build a delightful, fast mobile app experience for an active outdoor audience?
Our Solution
Virtual Verse Studio built WindUp as a clean, fast iOS application that puts precision wind alerting in athletes' pockets:
- Custom alert engine — users define their preferred wind speed range, direction, and location, and WindUp's backend continuously monitors conditions against those parameters, firing a push notification the instant they're met
- AI-enhanced forecasting — raw data from 10,000+ global weather stations is processed with AI models that improve forecast accuracy, reducing false alarms and missed sessions
- Intuitive setup flow — onboarding was designed to get athletes from download to their first configured alert in under two minutes, with simple, sports-specific language
- Minimal, focused UI — the interface was designed with athletes in mind: large, legible data displays, dark mode support, and fast load times for quick checks between sessions
- Reliable background processing — the alert system runs reliably in the background without draining battery, a critical requirement for mobile sports apps
