Overview
NBK Virtugate is a fully gamified onboarding platform built for the National Bank of Kuwait — one of the region's most prestigious financial institutions. New employees no longer sit through slide decks or video walkthroughs. Instead, they step into a rich 3D virtual world, explore the bank's departments, learn its history, and discover internal tools through an avatar-driven experience accessible directly from the browser via WebGL, or in full immersion via VR headsets.
The Challenge
Large organizations like NBK struggle to deliver consistent, engaging onboarding at scale. Traditional orientation sessions are time-consuming, resource-heavy, and quickly forgotten. The bank needed a solution that would:
- Convey the depth of the bank's culture and history in a memorable way
- Allow new hires across different locations to experience the same quality onboarding
- Track engagement and completion in a measurable way
- Be accessible without specialized hardware (browser-first, VR optional)
Our Solution
Virtual Verse Studio designed and built a custom WebGL environment using Unity — requiring no app install and running directly in the browser. The environment features:
- Interactive 3D departments — employees navigate virtual floors representing real bank departments, learning what each team does through embedded media and interactions
- Immersive history wing — a dedicated space bringing NBK's founding story and milestones to life with 3D artifacts and spatial audio
- Avatar-based exploration — employees customize their avatar and explore at their own pace, creating a personal connection to the experience
- VR mode — the same environment supports Meta Quest headsets for full VR immersion during in-person orientation sessions
Key Features
- Browser-based WebGL deployment — no install required
- Dual-mode: desktop browser + VR headset support
- Custom 3D environment with branded assets
- Spatial audio and ambient environment design
- Modular content system for easy updates
Results & Impact
NBK Virtugate transformed a traditionally passive process into an active, engaging experience. The platform launched successfully and received strong internal feedback from HR leadership and new hires alike. Employee comprehension and engagement scores improved measurably compared to the legacy onboarding process.
