Overview
Empathy Lab is a VR training platform purpose-built for the UK rail industry — an environment where empathy, communication, and crisis management are as important as technical knowledge. The platform puts transport staff directly into realistic, high-pressure scenarios, allowing them to practice and develop critical soft skills in a safe, immersive environment that classroom training simply can’t replicate.
The Challenge
The UK rail sector faces a persistent challenge: training front-line staff to handle emotionally complex, high-stress situations involving passengers — from delays and disruptions to vulnerable individuals and conflict. Traditional training methods rely on role-play exercises and lectures, which lack the realism needed to drive genuine behavioral change. The client needed a solution that:
- Created genuine emotional stakes in training scenarios
- Placed staff in first-person perspectives of both staff and passengers
- Was scalable across multiple depots and regions
- Produced measurable improvements in staff behavior and empathy
Our Solution
Virtual Verse Studio designed and built a suite of first-person VR scenarios that put railway staff into the shoes of their passengers as well as their own roles:
- Perspective-switching scenarios — staff experience situations from both the employee’s and the passenger’s point of view, building genuine empathy for the people they serve
- Realistic high-pressure environments — scenarios include platform disruptions, delayed announcements, and encounters with passengers in distress, all rendered with environmental detail that makes the situation feel real
- Behavior-focused design — each scenario was crafted with training psychologists to ensure the VR experience targets the specific behavioral outcomes the client needed
- Debrief integration — the platform supports structured post-session debrief conversations, reinforcing lessons learned in the headset
Key Features
- First-person perspective-switching (staff and passenger viewpoints)
- Realistic UK rail environment recreations
- High-stress and emotionally complex scenario library
- Designed with behavioral training principles
- Supports structured debrief and reflection sessions
Results & Impact
Empathy Lab delivered a training experience that generated genuine emotional responses from participants — the hallmark of effective empathy training. Staff who went through the VR program demonstrated measurable improvements in their approach to customer-facing situations, validating VR as a powerful tool for soft skill development in the transport sector.
